Moose On The Loose 10 Mile Trail Relay
August 29, 2004 Nashua, New Hampshire

The Moose On The Loose 10 Mile Trail Relay attracted 35 teams of 4 runners to challenge the hilly lower trail of Mine Falls Park on a day that reached into the 90's with high humidity. The runners came out on top as a great time was had by all!
The food table, beautifully decorated by Gigi Amarello, included oranges, bananas, apples, watermelon, bagels, mini-pitas, muffins, cup cakes, pretzels, yogurt, and lots of water - both plain and ProPel flavored sports water. The heat ruled as the watermelon disappeared fast. Despite the excessive heat and humidity, the 436 bottles of water lasted until the final minutes of the event. Fortunately, several smart race volunteers held back a few bottles for the last few runners. It seems that 3+ bottles of water per person was need to overcome mother nature.
DJ Jojo P of FilMix provided groovy sounds throughout the event and featured lots of motivating running songs such as the Chariots of Fire Theme, Born To Run, and Cotton-Eyed Joe (???). Jojo P also helped with race announcements. Special thanks go out to Vic of the Nashua Parks & Recreation Department for making sure the gate into Mine Falls Park was open for us and for picking up the trash bags so fast during the race that we thought we were in Disneyland!!!
As to the race itself, The Toe Tappin Fools took and early lead over the CMS Boyz, as Chris Van Cott and Kent Taylor tapped their toes to a small lead after two legs. However, the CMS Boyz last 2 runners, Kevin Tilton and Richard Bolt, ran down the toe tappers to take a 54:04 - 55:20 victory. The Moose Milers Male Open team (including Rebecca Noe of the fairer sex) took 3rd.
On the ladies side, the Lynx Elite HS Girls led from start to finish for an easy 5 minute voctory over their younger teammates (Lynx Elite Girls), with the Moose Milers Master Women taking 3rd.
The Greater Derry Track Club Mixed Masters romped to victory in the coed race with a 6 minute win over the Fish Fries and Fish Sticks - 2 teams from the Squanacook River Runners. Relay Results

Post race comments came fast and furious as many runners voiced praise for the race, the volunteers performance, the disk jockey, the food spread, and the funny guy in the Sombrerro. Positive comments continue to arrive by email as I write this 27 hours after the race. I would have written this article last night, but chose to sleep instead (as if I had any choice in the matter!).
Thanks to our sponsors: Loco Sports, ProPel Sports Water, RoadID, Cliff Bars, Hockomock Swamp Rat, Carol Parnell Acupuncture, and Running Times.
Thanks to all our volunteers: Tom Kolb, Brian Kenney, Mike Whelton, Gigi Amarello, Chris Amarello, Elliott Nott and the New England College Cross Country Team, Jason Bigonia, Damian Rowe, Bill Morse, Bob Mulvaney, Susan Kenney, Dave Pember, Jim Logan, Steve Moland, and anybody else who pitched in to make this race a great success. Plans are already in the works for next year's event to be held on August 28, 2005. Additions to next year's race will be a 2-runner relay (5 miles each), and possibly individual 2.5, 5, and 10 mile races. |
